The reception of international students takes place in the most diverse universities around the world. It happens in several ways, without a ready-made recipe for what is right or wrong, as an extremely versatile process. At the Federal University of Santa Maria-UFSM, until the first semester of 2022, this reception was concentrated in the first week of classes of the period, mainly due to the reduced number of professionals on the International Affairs Office - SAI team. However, welcoming foreigners is not just a week of reception activities. It is necessary to follow up and monitor them throughout their mobility, due to the lack of a support network, cultural differences and language barriers. Therefore, the objective of this work is to present the way in which the Student Relations Unit has been developing its activities and the impact of these actions on the internationalization process of UFSM (which is the number 1 challenge of its Institutional Development Plan). The result of the implementation of the unit and the change in the dynamics of its work is the creation of biannual schedules of activities for international students with innovative cultural actions, such as exchanging experiences with the institution's indigenous students, promoting games and activities typical of the region and the country, with the help and partnership of various sectors of the institution and the city, in addition to health promotion actions. In view of the above, we conclude that effective reception allows greater monitoring and support of foreigners, the identification and rapid fulfillment of their needs, the socialization of foreigners with the academic and local community, provides integration among international students from different countries, creates a support network among them, generates good memories of experiences, enables cultural exchange, presents local culture and promotes the city and state on the international circuit, besides that it must involve not only the institution, but also the external community. The experience of a continuous welcome throughout the year has proved to be important for foreigners at the university, who end up establishing a better and greater bond with the institution and performing better.
