Inclusive International Education: Empowering Underrepresented Students through Education Abroad Oral PresentationInclusion, Equity and Diversity09:00 AM - 10:30 AM (America/Sao_Paulo) 2025/04/30 12:00:00 UTC - 2025/04/30 13:30:00 UTC
This session brings together education abroad professionals and university faculty from the United States and Brazil to discuss inclusive international education. By leveraging the expertise of international education specialists, we aim to explore the power of inclusive education abroad opportunities that promote internationalization. At the core of the discussion is broadening access to international education between the United States and Brazil. While Brazil faces structural inequalities that limit students studying abroad, US education programming- such as cost, program length, and curricular fit- hinder students from selecting Brazil as a study destination. Recognizing this dual challenge, the session will focus on faculty directed short-term programs as a catalyst for addressing this deficit. These programs provide an accessible option for students who may face financial constraints, academic commitments, or work responsibilities, making them ideal for expanding participation, especially for underrepresented students. This session will also provide insights into pedagogical and programmatic elements that maximize student learning. Faculty expertise, together with the insights of Campus B, a Brazilian international education provider, allow for the creation of programming that equips students with a range of academic, personal, and professional benefits. Central to this discussion is the development of global awareness and intercultural competency, which are critical outcomes of education abroad experiences. Research will demonstrate how these competencies are cultivated during international programs, preparing students to engage in diverse and interconnected global environments. This session will highlight strategies for expanding education abroad opportunities, with an emphasis on underrepresented and minoritized students. The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), is recognized as one of the the most ethnically rich and culturally diverse campuses in the US, with a strong commitment to social justice, equity, and inclusion. Moreover, the focus program, "Education, Globalization, and the Child" is housed in the UIC College of Education; Education students are less likely to study abroad than their counterparts in business or engineering. In this way, the program reaches underrepresented students in international education. Across three cohorts of students (2022-2024) who participated in the program, 91% are first generation college students, 42% grew up in a multilingual household, and 79% are students of color. This diverse student group allows for an exploration of educational experiences across different identities. Yet another point of accessibility is considering Brazil as a destination. According to the IIE Open Doors report, while Europe generally hosts about 75% of US study abroad students, in 2021-2022, Brazil hosted only 636 students, less than 1% of all US students studying abroad that year. The destination of a non-traditional country like Brazil further expands education abroad opportunities. This varied approach to making education abroad accessible reflects a commitment to equity and inclusion in international education. Through research findings and programmatic examples, this session will highlight the power of international education and the critical role of inclusive programs. By building stronger partnerships and creating more equitable access to these opportunities, international education can empower students and communities, fostering a more interconnected and inclusive global future.

Fostering Cross-Cultural Understanding in Higher Education Through International Partnerships Oral PresentationInterculturality09:00 AM - 10:30 AM (America/Sao_Paulo) 2025/04/30 12:00:00 UTC - 2025/04/30 13:30:00 UTC
In an increasingly interconnected world, higher education institutions (HEI) play a pivotal role in cultivating global citizens capable of navigating and respecting diverse cultural contexts. International partnerships are essential in fostering this global mindset, as they provide HEI with the opportunity to promote cross-cultural understanding, collaboration, and mutual respect among students, faculty, and staff from different backgrounds. This proposal explores how international partnerships can be leveraged to enhance cultural diversity and understanding, focusing on practical strategies and the potential outcomes for HEI. International partnerships are instrumental in promoting cultural exchanges that challenge ethnocentric perspectives and encourage a deeper understanding of global diversity. When students and faculty engage with their peers from different countries, they develop a better understanding of cultural norms, practices, and worldviews, which can break down barriers of misunderstanding and promote empathy. These partnerships can take many forms: collaborative research projects, student mobility, joint degrees, and virtual collaborations. Each provides a unique opportunity to facilitate meaningful cross-cultural dialogue and broaden the horizons of the academic community. Joint research projects between universities from different countries advance academic knowledge and create a platform for researchers and students to interact across cultural lines. Research initiatives can address global challenges, requiring input from a variety of cultural perspectives, fostering a sense of shared responsibility and cooperation (de Wit & Hunter, 2015). They convey a solid basis for student mobility. Exchanging students from diverse countries allows them to experience first-hand other cultural and academic practices. These experiences shape more globally minded students, who return with a heightened understanding of cultural diversity and an openness to different perspectives (Teichler, 2017). Given the limitations posed by geography and resources, virtual exchanges provide an inclusive and cost-effective way to engage in cross-cultural interactions, allowing students and faculty from partner universities to collaborate in a virtual setting, thus facilitating cultural exchange without the need for physical travel. Universities can foster cultural awareness by incorporating cultural sensitivity training into their international programmes: orientation sessions for students and faculty engaging in exchange programs, designed to equip them with the tools to navigate cultural differences effectively. While international partnerships present vast opportunities for promoting cross-cultural understanding, they also face challenges such as language barriers, unequal access to resources, and differing educational systems. Addressing these requires careful planning, transparent communication, and flexibility from both institutions. Establishing clear objectives, offering language support, and ensuring equitable access to programmes can help mitigate these issues (Marginson & Sawir, 2011). International partnerships in higher education are invaluable in promoting cultural diversity and understanding. By implementing thoughtful strategies universities can foster a more inclusive, and globally engaged academic community, preparing students to contribute positively to an increasingly globalized world.
