20250429T1430 20250429T1630 America/Sao_Paulo Research Without Borders: Empowering Global Minds for the 2030 Agenda

This 90-minute panel will explore how international partnerships in research and the mobility of PhD students and early-stage researchers can contribute to the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The discussion will focus on how networks such as "Magalhães" can promote "internationalisation by research" as a driving force for sustainable global collaboration. By encouraging the exchange of knowledge, resources, and innovation through cross-border research, international partnerships can be better aligned with the *Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)*.

The *Magalhães Network*, which fosters collaboration among universities in Latin America and Europe, has been instrumental in promoting research-based internationalisation, particularly through the mobility of PhD students and early-stage researchers. These groups are vital to creating a research ecosystem that addresses global challenges related to sustainability, equity, and innovation. The panel will highlight:

- How mobility programs for young researchers within the Magalhães Network foster knowledge-sharing and innovation with a sustainable focus.

Structure:

1. Opening Remarks (5 minutes)

The moderator will introduce the panel topic, focusing on the role of "internationalisation by research" and the importance of mobility for PhD students and early-stage researchers. The link between research collaborations, student mobility, and the achievement of the SDGs will be outlined, with specific examples from the Magalhães Network.

2. Speaker Presentations (10-15 minutes each)

Three expert speakers will share their experiences and insights related to sustainable internationalisation through research:

- *Speaker 1*: A representative from a Magalhães Network university discussing the impact of international research collaborations on sustainable development, with examples of successful mobility programs for PhD students.

- *Speaker 2*: A PhD student or early-stage researcher who has participated in international mobility programs, discussing how their research contributes to specific SDGs and how mobility fosters sustainable innovation.

- *Speaker 3*: A policy expert or coordinator from the Magalhães Network exploring the systemic role that PhD student mobility and early-stage research programs play in embedding sustainability principles across universities.

3. Interactive Discussion (30 minutes)

The interactive session will use the *World Café method* to engage participants in focused small-group discussions. Key themes will include:

- How can "internationalisation by research" be more effectively aligned with the SDGs?

- What policies and support mechanisms are needed to facilitate sustainable research collaborations and mobility for early-stage researchers?

Groups will report their conclusions to the larger audience, generating collective insights into the ways PhD mobility and research partnerships can drive sustainable internationalisation.

4. Closing Remarks (5 minutes)

The moderator will summarize the key points from the presentations and discussion, with actionable takeaways on how international research collaborations and PhD student mobility can contribute to sustainable development goals. Special emphasis will be placed on how the Magalhães Network can continue to support such initiatives.
