A Case Study on the Internationalisation of the Curriculum Latam Framework by the Center for Internationalisation of Education Brazil-Australia Oral PresentationInternationalization at Home & Internationalization of Curriculum05:00 PM - 06:30 PM (America/Sao_Paulo) 2025/04/29 20:00:00 UTC - 2025/04/29 21:30:00 UTC
The Center for Internationalisation of Education Brazil-Australia, a joint initiative between the Australian Embassy and PUCRS, is the first hub for internationalisation of education in Latin America. Since its launch in 2020, the Center has worked to promote the development of research, workshops and seminars on different topics related to internationalisation of education and expanded cooperation networks between Australia and Latin America. This session seeks to present on the Center's extensive work to develop the Internationalisation of the Curriculum Latam (IoC Latam) framework and website, which are based on Betty Leask's IoC in Action framework. The framework assists understanding of the broad concept of internationalisation of the curriculum as well as the role of the disciplines and academic staff in it. It identifies some of the key questions that need to be considered when engaging in the process of internationalisation of the curriculum in a particular academic program. This session proposes to present the case study of how this project was created, developed and implemented in Brazil in partnership with the Australian Embassy, Curtin University and La Trobe University with funding from the Council on Australia Latin American Relations (COALAR) grant.

Developing Model Joint PhD's: how it’s done in Australia and beyond RoundtableStrategic Cooperation05:00 PM - 06:30 PM (America/Sao_Paulo) 2025/04/29 20:00:00 UTC - 2025/04/29 21:30:00 UTC
Joint PhD's can be a very worthwhile undertaking for students and institutions alike. This undertaking is not without its challenges, however, and many institutions struggle with understanding how PhD systems and curriculums work in different countries and contexts in order to develop and implement these types of transnational education programs that benefit students, professors and strengthen institutional partnerships. These programs allow candidates to gain international and cultural experiences, exposure to different academic environments, and access to international supervisors, equipment and facilities, international networking opportunities, and enhanced future employment opportunities. Joint PhDs are internationally recognised as a means of establishing and enhancing strong and enduring relationships with international research universities and researchers. They can establish and enhance international research collaborations, provide opportunities for joint publications, provide access to new funding schemes and make the university a more attractive destination for both domestic and international PhD candidates. Establishing these types of programs can be challenging but very rewarding. Therefore, this workshop seeks to present case studies on what model PhDs look like in Australia, Brazil and beyond, as well as how different countries overcome different PhD requirements from partner institutions and how they develop programs that support sandwich PhDs/cotutelle agreements and other programs.

International Partnerships as Catalysts for Cultural Understanding and Collaborative Research: The Brasillinois Initiative Oral PresentationStrategic Cooperation05:00 PM - 06:30 PM (America/Sao_Paulo) 2025/04/29 20:00:00 UTC - 2025/04/29 21:30:00 UTC
This conference session will examine the guiding principles and strategic framework of 'Brasillinois,' a transformative initiative launched by the University of Illinois to foster dynamic collaboration and knowledge exchange with Brazil. The initiative aims to pioneer a model of cross-national collaboration that drives groundbreaking research of regional and global significance, and that strengthens cross-cultural understanding through mobility of students, researchers, and academic staff. University-to-university partnerships will enable students from the University of Illinois and Brazilian universities to engage in educational experiences through study abroad programs, internships, and collaborative research projects. Such opportunities not only enhance academic and professional development, but also offer students the chance to immerse themselves in different cultural contexts, essential to foster global citizenship and cultural empathy. The initiative's three initial research clusters will afford opportunities to develop new institutional partnerships, as well as broaden and deepen existing ones. The research clusters will focus on climate and sustainability; public health and medicine; and democracy and inclusion. Collaborative research will cover a range of fields, including education, climate science, health, and technology. By connecting scholars from both countries, the initiative will drive groundbreaking research that benefits both the Global North and the Global South. Participants of this session will gain insight into how strategic, intentional international partnerships, like Brasillinois, can challenge traditional hierarchies in global education, promote equity and reciprocity in knowledge exchange, and serve as powerful tools to advance cultural understanding. The co-presenters include the former president of a federal Brazilian university who is leading the Brasillinois initiative, an associate professor who leads a research cluster and an annual study abroad program to Brazil, and an administrator with more than 15 years of experience in international partnerships.
