The intersection between technological tools and faculty creativity in facilitating engaging ice-breaking activities in COIL projects

Internationalization at Home practices, increasingly supported by digital technologies, have been significantly enhanced through the integration of Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) projects. Various digital platforms have been employed by faculty to implement Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) across different disciplines within Higher Education Institutions. However, the effective facilitation of intercultural dialogue through these technological resources depends on their intentional and creative use by educators. The success of the COIL model relies on facilitators' ability to collaboratively design and implement meaningful tasks that transcend national borders and promote interculturality. This presentation draws from the authors' practical experience and reflections while implementing COIL projects at Universidade de Passo Fundo in Brazil. Analyzing previous collaborations, it is relevant to point out that one critical phase in this dynamic educational context is the ice-breaking stage, where students engage in initial dialogues to become acquainted with their international peers. Well-planned icebreakers proved to be vital for fostering relationship-building in intercultural collaborations. Therefore, the objective of this presentation is to offer insights into the creative use of digital platforms to promote student engagement since the initial steps of COIL activities. Leveraging the affordances of multiple digital platforms, this proposal seeks to promote reflections on how to design activities which can encourage cultural exchange and understanding through synchronous and asynchronous ice-breaking modules to develop a sense of trust and community and lead the collaborations to more fruitful exchange.

Enseñanza del español online a instituciones de Brasil como un aporte de Santo Tomás Educación Superior - Chile al Programa INILATmov+ para un mejor entendimiento entre nuestras culturas.

Desde el año 2021 Universidad Santo Tomás ha impartido clases de español online semestralmente a estudiantes y académicos de diversas partes del mundo, destacándose particularmente en Brasil, con la participación de 19 instituciones de educación superior brasileñas.
Junto a la Coordinación Nacional de Lenguaje de UST, se han llevado cabo 27 cursos de niveles Básico e Intermedio durante 8 semestres, con un total de 780 estudiantes.
Este esfuerzo se enmarca en el proyecto de Internacionalización de la institución, liderado por su Dirección de Relaciones Internacionales, que se desarrolla con el objetivo de estrechar la colaboración con universidades brasileñas en convenio, y también como un aporte al Programa INILATmov+, una iniciativa que Santo Tomás lidera en conjunto con Learn Chile para las instituciones de INILAT en Latinoamérica. Hasta la fecha, 626 estudiantes y académicos brasileños han participado en estos cursos, logrando aportar en el impacto positivo que la enseñanza del idioma español tiene en la promoción del intercambio educativo y cultural entre ambos países.
Entre las instituciones brasileñas que forman parte de este programa, se encuentran universidades y centros de Educación Superior ubicados en diversas regiones de Brasil, como São Paulo, Río de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Bahia, Maranhão, Paraná, y Tocantins. Estas colaboraciones permiten a los estudiantes brasileños adquirir competencias lingüísticas en español, un idioma fundamental en la zona, facilitando su futura inserción en mercados laborales hispanohablantes y fortaleciendo los vínculos culturales y educativos entre Brasil y Chile.
Los estudiantes que han participado en estos programas reconocen la calidad de la enseñanza y el valor de la experiencia:
Amanda de Cássia de la Universidad Federal de Itajubá, señaló: "Siempre había deseado aprender español, y la Universidad Santo Tomás me brindó una oportunidad invaluable. El ambiente académico es acogedor y los profesores son altamente cualificados. Recomiendo esta experiencia a todos aquellos que deseen ampliar sus horizontes".
Por su parte, Jonas Souza, estudiante de la Universidade Estadual do Maranhão, expresó: "Lo que más me ha gustado de esta experiencia es la oportunidad de interactuar con un sistema educativo diferente y conocer personas de diversas nacionalidades". También, Ana Luiza Tostes, de la Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora, comentó sobre su experiencia: "La receptividad de los profesores fue excelente, y las clases fueron muy dinámicas. Esta experiencia no solo me ayudó a mejorar mi español, sino que también me permitió conocer mejor la cultura chilena".

A formação de docentes universitários para iniciativas de intercâmbio virtual

Considerando que menos de 1% em média da população acadêmica universitária brasileira tem condições de se engajar em atividades de mobilidade física, vários gestores e professores têm optado por estratégias de internacionalização que sejam menos excludentes e exclusivas, envolvendo a modalidade virtual (Mendes; Finardi, 2023) como forma de inclusão e de formação de cidadãos globais (Guimarães; Finardi, 2021) com mais cooperação entre os parceiros envolvidos (Finardi; Mendes; Silva, 2022). Nessa direção, o intercâmbio virtual (IV) tem se apresentado como uma estratégia relevante e mais abrangente e inclusiva de Internacionalização em Casa (IeC) (Finardi; Salvadori; Wehrli, 2024; Finardi; Asik, 2024; Salomão; Freire Jr. 2020). Apesar das potencialidades do IV, nem todos os professores se sentem preparados para ofertar essas iniciativas, seja por falta de informação sobre o potencial ou desenho do IV, ou por questões de falta de formação (continuada) para a incorporação do IV em suas práticas, ampliando o potencial de suas parcerias. De forma a contribuir para a formação de docentes universitários de várias áreas do conhecimento para a implementação de IV em seus contextos, cursos têm sido organizados em várias instituições de ensino (e.g. Salomão; Calvo, 2024). Nesse âmbito, esta comunicação tem como foco o curso "Intercâmbio virtual como estratégia de internacionalização em casa: formação para docentes", organizado e ministrado para docentes da Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp), Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (UFES) e Universidade Federal de Goiás (UFG), no segundo semestre de 2024. Serão apresentados os resultados desta iniciativa formativa para internacionalização, a organização do curso, o seu programa e as atividades propostas. Além disso, considerações a respeito de aspectos envolvendo a formação docente para IV no cenário nacional serão discutidas. Espera-se contribuir para ações, discussões e propostas de internacionalização englobando os atores envolvidos em seus contextos de atuação de forma a incentivá-los a analisarem os impactos do IV na sua prática docente.

In this presentation, we intend to share experiences from a Brazilian university which participated in a capacity-building project geared towards Virtual Exchange (VE) as an alternative to traditional mobility and a way to promote internationalization at home (IaH). Using a qualitative approach, we seek to identify the main challenges and opportunities in the design, implementation and evaluation of VE initiatives, with and without institutional support. Insights for the analysis will be brought from the perspective of the authors of this presentation, who are also the proponents of the VE activities, and a stakeholder from the international office involved. Preliminary results suggest that more institutional support is necessary to carry out more VE actions in the institution analyzed, given the participants' satisfaction with the opportunity to interact with peers from different academic and cultural backgrounds.

Critical Lenses, Intelligent Tools: Exploring AI in a COIL Documentary Project

This presentation explores the intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Critical COIL Virtual Exchange through an innovative project conducted in 2024 between Universidad Católica Andrés Bello (Venezuela) and Centro Paula Souza/Cesu (São Paulo, Brazil). The project, will focus on creating a documentary, leveraged by Critical Virtual Exchange (CVE) principles as outlined by Hauck (2023), incorporating AI tools to guide the creative process and stimulate critical reflection among participants. We will highlight how the project embodied key aspects of CVE, including translanguaging (English, Portuguese, and Spanish), critical digital literacy using tools like ChatGPT, addressing inequalities by considering technology access in both countries, and creating "living knowledge" through students' immersion in the documentary creation process. The presentation will delve into unique aspects of the project, such as the use of Google NotebookLM to aggregate various forms of information, the employment of AI in script creation, the continuous reflection process on AI-generated results, and the development of critical analysis skills. Furthermore, we will discuss how this project contributes to Critical Internationalization at Home (IaH) by fostering learner agency, glocal awareness, and critical thinking about emerging technologies. At the time of the presentation, the author will provide detailed insights into student interactions and the critical solutions developed in response to AI-generated proposals, offering valuable perspectives on integrating AI tools into educational contexts while maintaining a critical and reflective approach.
