Technologies and Digital Systems in the Internationalization of Research: Building Global Academic Bridges

Session Information

Abstract:
This roundtable critically examines the pivotal role of emerging technologies and digital systems in advancing the internationalization of research within higher education. As digitalization reshapes the global academic landscape, universities and research institutions worldwide are increasingly positioned to engage in more efficient and inclusive cross-border collaborations. The session brings together leading experts to discuss innovative technological solutions and the complexities of integrating digital systems to enhance international academic partnerships. Key areas of focus include:

AI-Powered Chatbots and International Academic Collaboration: Chatbots, driven by artificial intelligence, have emerged as essential tools in optimizing communication between researchers and academic institutions. These systems offer real-time administrative, cultural, and academic support, facilitating smoother transitions for researchers working in diverse and multicultural academic settings.

Translation Services in Academic Mobility: The growing mobility of researchers has intensified the demand for academic documentation in English. In response, the Translation Service at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, in collaboration with the Office of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Undergraduate Studies and SETIC, has managed the translation of essential academic documents and introduced automated systems for generating English-language transcripts and certifications, thus preparing the institution for broader global academic engagement.

Digital Technologies in the Translation of Scientific Outreach Texts: The translation of scientific outreach texts is critical to institutional internationalization. Digital tools have transformed this process, enabling more efficient, precise, and dynamic translations, thereby facilitating broader dissemination and increased international engagement with scientific knowledge.

Training Undergraduate Students to Adapt Educational Materials for EMI Contexts:In response to internationalization movements in pedagogical contexts, a project was developed to train undergraduate English students to adapt online educational materials for use in English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) contexts. This initiative enables students to acquire new knowledge, expand their international experiences, and explore other cultures. Moreover, it prepares future teachers with cognitive skills in specific subject areas and intercultural competencies, essential for thriving in multicultural markets.

ORCID Integration and Global Research Networks: The integration of ORCID, a unique and permanent digital identifier for researchers, is facilitating the tracking of research outputs and fostering international collaborations. Universities are increasingly incorporating ORCID into their systems to build stronger academic networks, enhance global visibility, and promote international recognition of researchers' work.
